car is shifting hard

Car: Acura, Integra, 1996, B18B1     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura Integra Repair Manuals

Q.1996 acura integra LS (non-VTEC) w/ 4 speed auto transmission. car is shifting hard and also would not start after it was warmed up, driven, turned off for a few minutes and attempted to restart (sometimes it would and sometimes it would not). getting a constant CEL on and a flashing D4 light. jumpered the 2 pins little green plug on the passenger side footwell and CEL shows 7 long flashes & 6 short flashes (then long pause and repeats) and D4 shows 1 flash (then long pause and repeats). cannot find these error codes anywhere.

any idea what to look at first?

I already checked/done: replaced electrical portion of the ignition switch. removed main relay and noticed some poor solder joints. new one on order. have not received yet.

Answer the main fuel relay sounds like the start issue.
the codes you recovered from the ecu are
the code 6 is the coolant temp circuit and the code 7 is the throtle posistion sensor.

let me know what you get. Dont worry about the test harness just back probe the connectors.

Addition where are the TCM & ECM located?
doing the checks at the TPS right now.

More Info required the pcm is located on the pasangers side on the right front kick panel to the right of the glove box
the tcm is on hte left side of the kick panel near the hood release.

Addition thanks for the locations. Will remove these panels now.
lockup control solenoid valve A troubleshooting: went straight to last step on pg 14-57 to measure resistance between pin 2 & GND. Got 1.7 ohms so it failed for the solenoid valve assembly.
ECT sensor check: unable to locate the ECT sensor. I think its the one where the lower radiator hose attaches to the engine. If it is, the wire colors are different from page 11-58. I have a GN wire and BK wire. Page says they should be RD/WH and GN/BK. Either way, i cannot test as i don't have a scan tool to determine if its -4 deg F or less. Do you have an equivalent voltage or resistance to use?

More Info required No this is where a volt ohm meter comes into the picture.

Addition location of the ECT?
what should the voltmeter read when doing the checks for -4 deg F?

More Info required The Ect is located on the lower radiator hose at the t/stat houseing
the range depends on your acutal temp this is a thermister type of sensor so the ohms will vary.

Addition ECT was replaced back in july 2009. Not sure if a honda/acura part was used, but are they prone to going bad?
voltages at PCM & TCM checked out per the troubleshooting sheets.

More Info required These sensors don't fail to often
I would look at the temp sensor did it ohm bad ?
The tps should what? Did you see any needle jumping when testing the sweep portion ?
I would reset the ecu and retest
also make sure the coolant level is topped off and the coolant is in good condition
old coolant will change the readings.

Answer hows the hunt coming along ?

Addition i have parts (temp sensor, main fuel relay & solenoid valve) on order.
the one temp sensor near the thermostat read continuity. I did find one that read an open (with the color wires you indicated), so i put it on order.
coolant is new as i just did the timing belt & water pump.
will report back as soon as parts arrive & i install them. Thanks for being patience & all the help so far.
may get to the TPS resistance readings today or tomorrow.

More Info required sure thing no worries just dropping in.

Addition installed the new parts (temp sensor, main fuel relay, shift solenoid valve) today.
CEL is gone. Temp sensor fixed the problem. Tried to read continuity on the old sensor and it reads open.
shifts smooooooth again and flashing D4 is gone. Solenoid valve fixed that.
went with a duralast relay (instead of factory honda part) and i have to wait 4 seconds after i turn it to ON before i can start it. Not sure why.

Answer thats great news glad this all worked out and you didn't have to spend a ton of money to fix.
