2007 Outback gear shift is stuck in drive position.

Q.2007 Outback gear shift is stuck in drive position. What can we do to fix this and what caused it? We know it is not the steering wheel position because we parked it overnight and then drove it to the store this morning but have to leave the key in the ignition because we cannot get it out of drive.
I already checked/done: Haven't been able to do anything but drive it forward, can't reverse or park it.
More Info required Did anything happen prior to this or you just went to put the car into park and realized the shifter would not move?
Addition A few weeks ago the brake light fuse blew and we replaced it. When it blew it activated the saftey that locks the shifter in park so we used the bypass button to get it out of park. Other than that, nothing unusual happened. It has over 60,000 miles on it.
More Info required OK, is the a/t temp light coming on and flashing or the check engine light?

More Info required OK, one last question. So the car will actually start with the shift lever stuck in drive?
Addition Yes, Also, just heard from my husband that the shifter works to get it in neutral and the sport shift will work just fine- it's just that reverse and park won't work.
Answer OK, this is a tough one, but I think the problem has to be with the shifter itself, or the inhibitor switch on the side of the transmission. He could try to pop the cover off the shifter and look in there to see if something is blocking the thing from actually shifting back into reverse and park. I think the micro switches inside might actually be out of time and if there is something blocking it, it just might resolve the entire problem. This is a tough one without being there, but that is my opinion.
