Ford Service Manuals

Answer The most common cause for this problem would be a out of adjustment brake pedal or brake switch. For manual trans, the clutch peadal switch could be the cause as well.
Check the pdedal to switch free play. If excessive, readjust and retest.

Addition I have an Automatic 91 Accord EX..the button om the dash lights up but the cruise set/resume on the steering wheel will not engage the system or set.

Answer Check the brake switch to pedal free play first. Switch ha 4 wires and has 2 circuits, one is for the brake lights and should have continuity when the pin is released out. When pin is pressed in, brake circuit would have no continuity but the other circuit would have continuity.

Addition Where is the brake switch..under the pedal..should all of this be in on of my books..I have the Chiltons and Haynes.

Answer I do not use Chilton and Haynes and is unable to confirm if reference is found.
The switch is located on the bracket above the brake pedal.

Addition OK I I have an ohm meter but I've never used it..It's a craftsman Autoranging multimeter..I have all sorts of settings..I see the Ohm part but I've only used this for house stuff like voltage. I have a Black wire and a Red on that can be hooked up to 4 different spots. I did how ever find the switch with 4 pins. I can check them I just need to know if or how to use my meter..should that pin that gets pushed in when the breke pedal is not pressed on be all the way in?

Answer When pedal is depressed, pin would be extended out fully.
When brake pedal is released, the pin should be all the way in with the stopper touching the switch base.

Answer 1 . Disconnect 4 -pin connector from brakelight switch. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between brakelight switch terminals "A" and "D".

Continuity should be present. Check for continuity between brakelight switch terminals "B" and "C". Continuity should not be present.
2 . Depress brake pedal and hold. Check for continuity between brakelight switch terminals "A" and "D". Continuity should not be present. Check for continuity between brakelight switch terminals "B" and "C". Continuity should be present. If continuity readings are not as specified, check brake pedal height. If brake pedal height is okay, replace brakelight switch.

Addition so witch lead should I put on the brake switch..red or black?

More Info required Both wire has to be used in ohmmeter mode and it can be in any direction, does not matter red or black test probe goes to which side. Just follw the explanation as outlined above.

Addition OK so everything on the brake switch seams to be working..any other suggestions?

Answer Did you remove the switch or tested it on vehicle? If removed, reinstall the switch and adjust the switch to pedal clearance. Retest the switch and if good, go for a test drive to confirm.

Addition what should the clearance be?

Answer BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT
Screw in brakelight switch until plunger is fully pressed (threaded end touching pad on pedal arm). Back off switch1/2 turn and tighten lock nut firmly. Ensure brakelights work when brake pedal is pressed.

Addition So none of this worked..what other things should I be looking for?

More Info required JUst want to confirm this, you mentioned the light turns on, is it just the switch light or the dash indicator ?

Addition the cruise does not work. The switch light works..the dash indicator does not.

Answer Here are the testing procedures.
Cruise Control Cannot Be Set
1 . Check fuse No. 4 (7.5 amp) located in underdash fuse box. Replace fuse as necessary. Check main switch.
See MAIN SWITCH under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
Check cruise control unit inputs.
See CRUISE CONTROL UNIT INPUT under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING.
2 . Check ground connection G301 located in left side of engine compartment next to windshield washer fluid reservoir. Check ground connection G401 located behind left kick panel. Check ground connection G402 located behind right kick panel. Repair ground connections as necessary.
3 . Inspect the following wires for open circuit: Black/Red wire between fuse No. 4 (7.5 amp) located in underdash fuse box and main switch located on instrument panel, and Light Green wire between main switch and cruise control unit connector. Repair wires as necessary.
MAIN SWITCH
1 . Turn ignition off. Carefully pry main switch from dashboard. Main switch is removed with one other switch in a switch panel. Disconnect main switch 5 -pin connector.
2 . Ensure main switch is off. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between main switch terminals "A" and "B" and terminals "D" and "E".

Continuity should be present. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, replace malfunctioning main switch.
3 . Ensure main switch is on. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between main switch terminals "A" and "B", "B" and "C", and "D" and "E". See Fig. 20 . Continuity should be present. If continuity is present, main switch is okay. If continuity is not present, replace malfunctioning main switch.
CRUISE CONTROL UNIT INPUT
1 . Turn ignition off. Remove dashboard lower left cover. Cruise control unit is located near left kick panel. Disconnect cruise control unit 13 -pin connector.
2 . Using a DVOM, perform cruise control unit input tests. See Fig. 33. If all input test results are okay, check cruise control unit connector for damage and proper fit to cruise control unit. If connector is okay and cruise control is still malfunctioning, replace cruise control unit.
