Aligning cam shaft

Car: Acura, Legend, 1992, V6(3.2L)     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura Legend Repair Manuals

Q.I recently replaced the water pump on a 92 aura legend 5sp and during the process I had the passenger side cam turn on me. Since then i have aligned the marks (while pistons 1 and 5 were up) to put the car in time several times but still the car wont start. Charged the battery and replaced the spark plugs. When I reset the timing, the car attempts to fire one time only but after that it just tries to turn over, and over again this the sound of no chance possible. I'm pretty sure everything on the harness is connected and grounded as i try to start the engine. Why will this car not start?

More Info required can you tell me how far the cam gear turned ?

Addition It was only about 1/8 degree turn (clockwise) coming out of compression. But from that point to now I have taken the timing belt off and back on many times trying to put the car in time. I aligned the timing marks with the crankshaft key mark straight up and #1 piston up. No start. Then i thought i may have flipped the exhaust and intake cycle so i brought the crankshaft back to top position (key mark up, piston 1 and 5 up) and brought both cams around (clockwise) and aligned with timing marks. I have repeated this process many times also and still no start.

More Info required was the car started when the belt was off time ?

Addition Hasnt started since I've taken it apart and tried to put it back together.

More Info required ok but did you try to start the car with the timing belt off time ?

Addition yes, when it made that 1/8 degree turn (clockwise) i couldnt find the passenger side cam's timing mark and remebered getting upset with myself becase after it wouldnt start i discovered the mark and saw it was off by that 1/8 degree turn.

Answer if the cam timing is correct now the next step is to do a compression test.
these motors are a interference motor and don't take much to make contact.

Addition How do you perform a compression test on one of these motors? And what is meant bynot taking much to make contact?

More Info required you will have to remove the coil packs and spark plugs and use a compression gauge.
this is to see if the valves have made contact with the top of the pistion's.
their maybe no damage but since the belt timing was off and tried to start the car we need to start here first and then proceed.
