where is the fuel filter on a 97 mercury sable?

Q.where is the fuel filter on a 97 mercury sable? is it inline where it is easily accessed or is it in the fuel tank?
Answer the fuel filter is located on the right side of the car on the frame rail close to the fuel tank, here is a diagram, hope this helps.
Addition is that what would cause the car to cut out?
When she change the gas to a higher grade of gas it seems to do it less often, but still does it.
More Info required A fuel filter going bad would cause more of a hesitation, when does it cut off, right after start up or while driving down the road?
Addition It is more of a hesitation down the road she says. She said she could barely make it up the hill.
Answer The fuel filter can cause that concern, need to take the filter off, shake the fuel out of the filter, wipe one end off, try to blow through the filter to see how much resistance is in the filter, it should be fairly easy to blow through, if not replace it and road test, a partial clogged exhaust system, or an engine miss fire can also cause this concern. Is the check engine light on?
Addition yes it came on at the same time.
Answer take the car to Auto Zone and have them retrieve the code, they will do it for free, if the fuel filter is the problem it should have a lean condition code, if there is a misfire code, it could be anything from base engine, to plugs and wires to exhaust concerns
