Installed Wipers. Page 2.
Posted on March 7, 2002
I had a terrible experience last Sunday. Driving on the highway and all over sudden my wipers went vertical!!!
I took the first exit put the wipers in default position as they were freely moving and went home slow. At home I removed windshield bottom cover (right picture just above) and looked at the wipers connecting rods. This small pastic cover (left picture) gives you an access to the rod socket connector to the wipers motor. As I expected it was gone :-((
Now it's time to remove the rod and deal with it. Metal sleeve type cover in the center top of the fire wall has to
be removed. Those black clips that hold it can be striked out and guess what - they're not available from the dealer.
You'd have to buy the whole rubber seal with those T-type clips that goes along the top of the fire wall (???)
Under the plastic cover I've found what I expected - socked is gone and motor just wasting electricity... Removing the
rod from the right wiper was no problem.
I used big flat screwdriver to snap it off. Brought it home and started examining
what can be done should it happened on the road. Withing 15 minutes I've found the solution. Cotter pin does miracles in
many cases but here it could be a real life saver. Where do you get a new rod in the middle of nowhere? If you have a pair of
pliers and one cotter pin about 3-4 mm in diameter - you're off easy.
Check the pictures below. Rod has a small (about 4 mm) hole just next to the socket hole. Straighten the cotter pin with
pliers and put it in the small hole and around the socket. Fix it on the other end and socket sits in its place better
than new!!
I'll finish this Tomorrow when my parts arrive (clips etc.) and I'll install the whole thing back together... PS. Update August 10, 2004: Connecting rod still in good shape and requires no replacement.
After I finally got my parts from the dealer - istalled wipers. |
