Car: Honda, Civic, 1997, 1.6     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Honda Civic Repair Manuals

Q.I had to replace a bad heater hose. I went ahead and replace all the hoses. refill the radatior. Now the engine is running hot. Went ahead and changed the theromostat. still running hot. If I take the thermostat out the engine run at normal temp. What can I do?

I already checked/done: replaced all heater hoses, replace thermostat twice when the car is running the heater is not getting hot at normal temp. when i take the thermostat out it runs normal temp

More Info required Are you taking any special procedure when filling the radiator?

Addition fill the rad to top fill the resevoir statred the engine let it idle until it reach normal temp refill again when i put the cap back on it goes to hot.

Answer You need to reinstall the thermostat. After reinstalling, hopefully with a honda part, locate the metal pipe that is attached to the valve cover via a rubber hose. Attached to this metal is a smaller metal pipe that has a rubber hose connecting it to a fitting just behind the thermostat housing. Remove the rubber hose from the pipe and fill the radiator until coolant comes out the hose. Sometimes you may have to bend the hose down a little to get it to run out. Fill the radiator, reconnect the hose, top of radiator and install cap. Fill plastic jug to the high mark and start the engine. If all is working properly, the fans should cycle on when the gage riches normal temp. This procedure removes the air from the back side of the thermostat. If there is air behind the thermostat it will not open and caused the engine to overheat. When you remove the thermostat, no air is trapped. I have found this procedure work on almost all hondas.

Addition there is no hose are metal pipe coming from the valve cover that connect to the fitting behind the thermo. The only hsoe to a metal pipe go to the back of the oil cooler and run to to air intake behind the air filter. The engine stays at normal temp until the cap is put on. Even with the engine running hot the air from the heater bliws cool.

Addition throttle body ex model.

Answer No heat is also an indication that there is not enough coolant in the system. You need to get the air out of the system. I bleed all Honda engines. You can also try filling the coolant system and run the engine until the cooling fan cycles twice with the cap loose. This is a way honda suggests. After the fans cycle remove the cap and fill. However the fan will not cycle without a thermostat. Is this car located in the US?

Addition the car is in alabama I will try this in the morning. It is getting late here. The thermo is install. There is no bleeder valve. Will the above do the trick.

Answer Thats what honda says. Im trying to figure out how to send you an image I found.
