Clutch is gone...

Car: Honda, Civic, 1991     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Honda Civic Repair Manuals

Q.i have a 91 honda civic hatchback 4 speed. As I was trying to put the car in 1st I heard a loud pop and my clutch pedal just turned to mush, and I can't get the car into any gear. Is this just a Clutch?

Answer Can you get the transmission into any gear without the car on?
Does the shift lever move as though it did before or is it all over the place? Will the clutch pedal even come up or is stuck on the floor? Is that the original clutch in the car? How many miles are on the car?
I would check a couple of areas. Here:
&

Fig. 1: Clutch assembly components.

Check the shift lever area if feels loose. Check on the transmission the release shaft to see if it moves at all. Check the clutch cable for being broken.
If you are unable to see anything broken, you will need to replace the clutch.

Addition The clutch pedal comes up but no pressure when I push down on it. I can put it in gear when the car is not on. It has 159000 miles, and I'm not sure if that's the original clutch or not. Lever seems to move the same, just can't find the gear.

Answer I would say the throw out bearing or other part of the clutch has broken. It will need to have the clutch replaced.
You may want to double check the clutch cable, but I'm sure the clutch has gone.
