recently my prelude has developed a serious oil leak
Car: Honda, Prelude, 1999, H22a - Back to Fix-It - Honda Prelude Repair Manuals
Q.i have a 99 prelude. recently it has developed a serious oil leak. it only leaks when the car is running, and it appears to be coming from the oil filter housing. is this a common problem? the car has 124k miles on it. the problem started a few weeks ago when it was around 25 degrees out. any suggestions?
I already checked/done: oil change w/ filter, replace oil pressure switch
Answer their is a o ring on the oil filter cooler that needs to be replaced.
your local honda dealer can order this o ring for you.
Addition is this o ring something that i can replace myself? I am working from below with my car up on ramps. Getting the oil filter housing off seems like it would be difficult as there is not much clearance. And i am not sure if this procedure is covered in my manual. Unfortunately my wife took the manual disc out of her computer at work, so i can't get it until monday. Another thing is that i'm not 100% sure if the oil is coming from here, it just looks like it. However, i can't see beyond the oil filter housing to see if it is coming from above it and dripping down onto it. But i am pretty sure that your suggestion is right given the amount of oil that comes out when the car is running.
Answer yes very easy to replace.
when you remove the oil filter you will see the threads the filter screws on their is a hex that you use a socket and remove this and the housing will come off and replace the o ring. This a 15 minute task.
