I'm told at 98,000 Km I now need a TIMING BELT?

Car: Acura, EL, 2004     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura Repair Manuals

Q.I'm told at 98,000 Km I now need a TIMING BELT. I see in the States you can buy one for $13.00 to $25.00 US. With shipping and US exchange, what should I reasonably except as a total cost up here in Canada for total, including installation? By the way I am still under warranty!
My Acura dealer about $600.00 for this job.

More Info required The prices you mentioned sound like an aftermarket belt pricing. I would not recommend one of these as they are of lesser quality. I recommend only the Genuine Honda brand.
It is also recommended to replace the water pump when replacing the timing belt.
I can give you some information on this, but as for a labor quote, this would be impossible as labor rates vary from shop to shop.
I can however give you some parts prices and labor times if that would be sufficient?

Addition Thanks for your reply. The recommendation that I use only Genuine Honda Parts is a good one, but I am not sure what kind of a price that should be! Also, I live in Calgary AB, CA, which is not exactly a cheap city to live in, so labour prices are quite high.
Don't know what city you are in but presume you are in the States somewhere so use maybe Denver or Dallas rates as an example if you could! Yes, parts prices and labor times would also be helpful.
Will look forward to your reply.

More Info required Ok. I am unable to price some one else's labor, I can only speak for myself. The parts should be close to the same as U. S. prices.
I will opt out so that hopefully someone in your area can quote you a price.

Addition OK, thanks anyway but I guess that was the reason I have been writing to you, to find out if the price I am going to be charged, is too high or not!
Also, you mentioned that the water pump should also be changed and that is the first I heard of this could that be that they have found out while doing their scheduled checkups that one is not necessary at this time, or can they even tell about water pumps while doing 'checkups'?
I will look forward to the next reply!

Answer Replacing the water pump with the timing belt is just standard practice as the water pump tends to wear out not too long after the timing belt does.
When the timing belt is off....you are only about 15 minutes away from replacing the water pump...so its a great time to change it and avoid the expense of tearing it all back apart later.....kind of like changing the filter..when you change the oil.
I can give you some figures and if my answer helps you, If it does not, no problem, you don't have to accept it and I will opt back out for another expert to help you.
Genuine Honda Parts
Timing Belt $55.15
Water Pump $130.63
Antifreeze, 1 gallon $14.00 ( always pour new in, since the old has to be drained)
Labor time is 4.9 hours....this is the hardest to estimate since this will vary from shop to shop. Most independent shops charge $50-$60 per hour. Most Honda dealers in the US average $80 an hour, but the important thing to know is the labor time. If someones labor time doesn't add up to the time I gave you above, you will know it.
