I turn the key, it cranks but it does not start up.

Car: Acura, CL, 1997, 2.2     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura Repair Manuals

Q.I turn the key, it cranks but it does not start up. It has a full tank of gas and all fuses are good. 97 Acura 2.2 CL. It just does not stay on.

I already checked/done: I checked all fuses, put gas

More Info required How many miles are on this Acura?
Will it fire and run if you keep your foot on the gas?
Has the check engine lamp been illuminated before it quit running?

Addition I have actually found that the ignition switch is the problem but I am having some problems removing it.
I want to see if the electrical contacts are in good condition.

Answer Then ignition switches on these are common failures and your may still be covered under the manufacture recall.
I would call a local dealer and run your VIN number by them to be sure. Below are the procedures to remove it, but the contacts are not servicable, and if the switch is opened, it can fail completely. You can also condemn the ignition switch by checking for voltage at the terminals in the different positions of the key.
Removal & Installation:
Disable the air bag system, as outlined in Section 6 of this manual.
Remove the dashboard lower cover.
Remove the knee bolster.
Unplug the connectors from the under-dash fuse block.
Remove the steering column upper and lower covers.

Upper and lower steering wheel assembly covers
Insert the key into the ignition, then place the ignition switch to the "O" position.
Remove the two screws which secure the switch to the mount.
Pull the ignition switch away from the mount.

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
Enable the air bag system, as outlined in Section 6 of this manual.

Addition The car stalls when the the key is moved from the III position to the II. Also the car is maintained on when the car is cranked and the key is held between position II and III.
Also I have tried removing the switch as illustrated but there is a metal plate preventing me from removing it all the way.

Answer Does sound like an ignition switch failure..can you take a picture of this "metal plate' and upload it here? I've removed hundreds of these switches and once the lower steering cover is removed the two screws are all that hold it to the lock housing..but I don't recall a metal plate.

Addition

Answer Thanks for the pics..have you poped the switch outward yet? Although the switch is close to that brace, it shoudl clear it. Be sure the electrical connector is disconnected on the other end and use a pocket sized screwdriver to pry it away from the lock housing. You should be able to angle that switch out of there.
