Accord began 'ticking' when the car was running (like the turn signals were on).

Car: Honda, Accord, 1992     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Honda Accord Repair Manuals

Q.My Honda Accord (92) began 'ticking' when the car was running (like the turn signals were on). The turn signals did not work, but the hazards did. I replaced the relay, and now the ticking has stopped, but the hazards don't work, either. I have looked for a schematic, but I can not find one. I do not have a multimeter, but I have a light thingy to check the connection...I just don't know where to start, or what else I need to fix this problem. Some of the hints I read said that it could be a short in the wiring near the relay, however, I do not think the it could be a short, because putting the bad relay in, duplicates the problem. I have looked for other relays, yet they all seem the same or they do not fit.

I do not have a lot of money...especially with my daughter going back to school soon, so please keep tat in mind when replying. Thank you.

More Info required Do the turn signals work, is the turn signal switched damaged at all feels loose etc.

Addition The turn signals still do not work, and the switch feels fine. The only difference is that now the hazards do not work and the clicking has stopped.

Answer Ok first you need to check the fuses and bulbs theres a good chance they could of shorted out the bulbs or the fuse popped if there is nothing coming on onthe dash the fuse or the hazard switch itself is bad the whole problem sounds like a shorted out hazard switch pop the hazard switch out and disconnect it and see if the turn siganls work.

Addition Where is the 'hazard switch'? The fuses are fine. It may take me awhile check the lights, but I doubt that they are bad, since the old relay re-creates the old problem (hazards work, turn signals do not..incessant clicking noise) I am assuming the bulbs are fine.

Answer Ok then yes the bulbs should be fine the hazard switch is in the dash with the triangle that pushes in just pop it out and disconnect it and see if the turn signals work also did you replace the relay with the same there is a turn signal and hazard relay.

Addition The relay is the same relay for both the turn signals and the hazards. I am attempting to find a OEM part, instead of a generic relay, since the right turn signals DO work, just the left side (front/back and in the dash) does not work (plus the incessant ticking) with the old one. The ticking slows down when the hazards are engaged, but that is the only difference (also, the lights work on the left side when the hazards are engaged, but they stop working when the left turn signal is switched on.)
Is this as confusing to you as me. I forgot how screwy it was, since I have had the generic part in for so long..
Someone also suggested that I replace some part in the steering column, but that also includes the horn and headlight I think..but both of those work..

Answer Well its possible the headlight switch is bad and when you put the and when you put the left turn siganls on it shorts out thats the next thing I would check.
