Q.1996 Subaru Legacy Outback - maunal transmission - I have a strange clicking/ticking sound at idle. If car is in gear and clutch depressed at stoplights, it makes the noise.
If I take the car out of gear and release the clutch, the noise goes away. It's not a very loud noise, and I can't tell whether or not it happens when shifting through the gears normally. I do need to replace my left front CV joint. Would it be related to that if I'm sitting still? What else might it be?

Answer HI there! It sounds like it may be the thro out bearing making some noise.
This should be checked by someone local in your area thaty could actually listen to the noise. From your description it sounds like the bearing. It would not be the axle because the car doesn't have to be in motion for you to hear it. Hope this helps! Thanks

Addition I'm saying it doesn't make noise when the clutch is out, and that it does make noise when depressed. Everything online says that the opposite would be true.

Answer When you push the clutch in, the thro out bearing is riding the fingers of the pressure plate. When you release the clutch the pressure plate is off the pressure plate. Otherwise the noise could be coming from one of the bearings inside the transmission, but I would suspect the thro out bearing.
